Having played in some of the world’s biggest high stakes cash games and earned over $8.8 million in tournaments, you’d think that Barry Greenstein would be above a play-money poker tourney. But every weekend, Greenstein has been grinding in the PokerStars “Sunday Billion” – the tournament that costs 1 million play-money chips to enter and offers a prize of 1 billion play chips. And Greenstein just captured his second Sunday Billion title in the past five weeks. Sure it’s just play money, but this is still a pretty incredible feat when you consider how popular the Sunday Billion is among …

GSN prompts Speculation on Return of TV’s “High Stakes Poker”

Posted on by RTR Dave

While there have been many poker shows on TV over the years, none captured the attention of mainstream audiences quite like High Stakes Poker (HSP). Running for seven seasons from 2006 to 2011 and featuring a wide array of famous players, HSP was one of the most popular programs on the Game Show Network (GSN). However, Black Friday struck and Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars stopped sponsoring the show, prompting GSN to pull it off the air. So for over three years, HSP has been dormant while a number of other mediocre poker shows have come and gone. But after …

Poker playing Buddhist Monks ignite controversy

Posted on by RTR Dave

The typical Buddhist monk lifestyle involves lots of praying, meditating, and seeking enlightenment. In this rigid routine, there’s little room for playing high stakes poker, drinking alcohol and smoking. That being the case, it’s no wonder Buddhist followers around the world are questioning the actions of eight monks from the South Korean “Jogye” sect. The story began when the eight monks traveled to a lakeside luxury hotel for a memorial service. They started drinking, smoking and playing poker around 9pm, all the while being secretly filmed. Their night of debauchery didn’t end until 8am – 13 hours after the party …

Full Tilt Pros missing from Seventh Season of High Stakes Poker

The good news is that we don’t have to wait long for the next season of High Stakes Poker because the seventh season begins on February 26th. The bad news is that several notable Full Tilt Poker pros won’t be involved this time around. It’s been reported that popular players like Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Ilari Sahamies, Eli Elezra and Patrick Antonius won’t be appearing in any High Stakes Poker episodes. The reason why is because they’re all signed by Full Tilt, and PokerStars has taken over as the official sponsor of High Stakes Poker. And even though their 27% …

Macau has Biggest Cash Games in History

If you follow high stakes poker news often, then you’ve heard of the huge poker games that take place on Full Tilt Poker.  Star players such as Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, llari Sahamies and “Isildur1” commonly play poker hands with $500/$1,000 blinds involved.  And while this is extremely impressive, the recent cash games at Macau dwarf these numbers. According to multiple news outlets, a giant cash game formed on the side of the Asian Poker Tour Macau event this past week.  Several Chinese business men formed the poker table, and started games where the blinds reached $5,000/$10,000 and …

Poker players wearing sunglasses has been a stereotype within casino poker for years.  But PokerStars’ player Daniel Negreanu is one person who doesn’t like this stereotype….in fact, he doesn’t even think people should be wearing sunglasses at the poker table period! Negreanu recently spoke of his disdain for sunglasses on the popular holdem poker show High Stakes Poker.  He basically said sunglasses hurt the game, and that sunglasses aren’t needed to learn how to play poker.  The other people who were playing poker hands with him such as Doyle Brunson and Tom Dwan agreed that sunglasses aren’t necessary. Daniel Negreanu …
