888 poker signs Flamboyant November Niner Bruno Politano

Posted on by RTR Dave

888poker just seem to keep bucking trends in online poker left and right. First, their player traffic increased during the second quarter of 2014, despite the overall industry experiencing an 8% traffic decrease. Now, they’ve signed colorful November Niner Bruno Politano to an ambassadorship deal at a time when PokerStars and Ultimate Poker dropped a combined seven pros. Of course, it’s not hard to see why 888 would break this trend for Politano, given that he has the biggest personality of any Main Event player left. Let’s discuss Politano’s personality more in depth along with what 888 hope that he …

How Liv Boeree’s US Vacation Turned Into An Incredible Poker Career

Posted on by RTR Dave

Today, Liv Boeree is one of the most recognizable faces in poker thanks to dozens of live tournament cashes and a lucrative deal with PokerStars. So it’s easy to forget that she, like many other pros, was once a total novice. Boeree’s first real brush with poker came in 2005, when she answered an ad to be on the reality TV show UltimatePoker.com Showdown. After making the cut, the Maidstone, Kent native got to be coached by three very famous pros in Phil Hellmuth, Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott and Annie Duke. What ensued was a developing fascination with poker that led …

Gaming Store Owner Jorryt Van Hoof leads 2014 November Nine

Posted on by RTR Dave

The card game Magic: The Gathering has already produced some very notable poker players, including 3-time WSOP champ Brock Parker, Justin Bonomo and David Williams. Now Jorryt van Hoof looks to follow in the long line of Magic-to-poker players. The Dutch pro leads the 2014 November Nine with 38,375,000 chips, which puts him in the best possible position to win the $10 million top prize. Assuming van Hoof can hang on to his chip lead and take down the WSOP Main Event, which is no small task, it would make his interesting background story all the more impressive. That said, …

2014 November Niner Felix Stephensen Still Learning Hold’em Tournaments

Posted on by RTR Dave

When the 2014 November Nine meets again, Felix Stephensen certainly won’t be the most inexperienced poker player there. He’s been an online poker pro for the past four years, specializing in Pot-Limit Omaha cash games. But Stephensen definitely lacks experience in what the WSOP Main Event is all about – No-Limit Hold’em and live tournament play. Before this year’s Main Event, the Norwegian had rarely played in Hold’em tournaments. This can be seen from the fact that he previously had just two career tourney cashes and $21,118 in winnings. Considering that Stephensen will start the 2014 WSOP Main Event final …

Two-Time November Niner Mark Newhouse looking for Redemption

Posted on by RTR Dave

Every year there are plenty of great stories to be found on the WSOP Main Event final table. And the 2014 November Nine is no exception, especially when you consider that several different nationalities are looking to win the first ME title for their country. But if there’s one story that overshadows them all, it is definitely Mark Newhouse. Last summer Newhouse ran through a field of 6,352 players to reach the 2013 Main Event final table with 7,350,000 chips, ranking him eighth to start. Given his chip disadvantage, he wasn’t exactly a favorite to win the tournament. However, Newhouse …

Event #61 – Matt Grapenthien overcomes pressure to win Stud Championship The name Matt Grapenthien doesn’t really set off any alarms in the poker community. But it should be mentioned that Grapenthien has made a pretty good living through online poker cash games over the past decade. And he put his skills on display while winning the 2014 WSOP $10k Seven Card Stud Championship along with $268,473. The Chicago native beat a 102-player field and overcame a 3:1 chip disadvantage while playing Todd Brunson heads-up. Just the sheer thought of winning a gold bracelet put lots of pressure on Grapenthien …

Event #52 – David Olson wins $10k Limit Hold’em after being talked into playing Detroit-born poker pro David Olson flew into Las Vegas with one thing on his mind: playing the Event #51 Monster (stack) tournament. But at the last minute, some of his friends talked him into playing the Event #52 $10,000 Limit Hold’em tourney as well. Olson can definitely thank his friends now after beating a 122-player field in this event to win his first gold bracelet and $303,909. Few would have picked the 27-year-old to win when final table play began. After all, he wasn’t one of …

2014 WSOP Quick Roundup: Events #46, #47 and #48

Posted on by RTR Dave

Event #46 – John ‘World’ Hennigan wins $50k Players Championship and $1.5m Earlier in his poker career, WSOP success came quick for John Hennigan as he won gold bracelets in a 2002 $2k HORSE event ($117,320) and a 2004 $5k Limit Hold’em tournament ($325,360). Since then, Hennigan’s career has had plenty of near misses in his pursuit of bracelet number three, including a second-place finish earlier this summer ($319,993) and a third-place effort in last year’s $50k Poker Players Championship. The latter is quite noteworthy here because Hennigan finally got over the hump by winning the 2014 WSOP $50k Poker …
