Poker games are a family of card-based games that have similar betting rules and sometimes hand rankings. Typically, the game of poker involves a number of rounds of betting during which cards are dealt to the player.

Poker games tend to differ significantly in the way they are played and there are four main variations of games. These are as follows.

In a straight game, players are dealt a complete hand in the first round and then betting commences, followed by a showdown at the end of the betting round.

In stud, cards are dealt in a variety of ways with some face up and others face down in a period of multiple betting rounds. Typically, players are dealt three cards face down, and two cards face up. Five-card stud and seven-card stud are examples, and they enjoy popularity in many online poker games.

In draw, the main difference is that players are dealt an entire hand face down and the objective is to make the best hand by discarding unwanted cards and drawing new ones. One of the most famous poker variants of draw is five-card draw. The most popular form of Stud, is 7-Card Stud, which was the most popular poker game in America until the advent of the No Limit Hold 'Em boom.

Community poker involves players being dealt a number of cards, usually two face down. At the same time the dealer deals a number of cards face up in the middle of the table. The objective is for players to make the best hand using their own cards and also the ones in the center of the table. This is the most well-known variety with the likes of Hold'em and Omaha the most famous.

Online poker games have been around for a number of years now and thanks to the televised WSOP one particular variation of poker has been made famous in many online poker games.
