Purple Lounge, sponsored poker player Stefan Mattsson has taken yet another huge step forward in his professional poker career, cashing €220,000 ($346,621) at the WPT Spanish Championship. Casino Barcelona where the final WPT was held, attracted a strong field of 253 players including among others: Juha Helppi; Carlos Mortensen; Annette Obrestad; Antonio Esfandiari and Patrik Antonius of which six returned for the final table including Stefan Mattsson who went into last day with the chip lead. After a tough final day Stefan ended 2nd in this extremely strong field of players and pocketed his largest cash to date.

Proving he’s not just a one hit wonder, Purple Lounge sponsored player, Stefan Mattsson’s 2nd place to Danish player Casper Hansen at this week’s WPT event in Barcelona could so easily have seen him crowned champion. In the final hand Hansen went all in with the chip lead holding As 2s after Mattsson raised $205k from the big blind. Mattsson called holding Ah9d and held the edge before the flop came 5h5d2d, giving the Dane two pair. Jc came on the turn and Kc on the and river, sealing the hand and the title for Hansen and 2nd place for Mattsson.

The 2nd place for Mattsson follows his success at the 2007 WSOP where he walked away 22nd in the main event pocketing more than $300k in the process. That place in turn followed an earlier 2006 WSOP placing of 57th which gave Stefan $123,699. Stefan Mattsson’s impressive form has not gone unnoticed, securing sponsorship from Purple Lounge in 2007 the Swede has continued his success through 2008 culminating in this 2nd place in Barcelona and leaving him in great form for this year’s WSOP and a potential 3rd cash running that the WSOP main event.

Stefan says: “Although I really wanted to win I am just proud to have got so far. To have come second place in an event that attracted a tough field of over 250 players with the likes of Patrik Antonius and Antonio Esfandiari, it is a great achievement. This tournament win puts me in a great frame of mind for the WSOP”. The strong field of experienced professionals does not seem to faze the Swede as he continues to cement his reputation and justify his tag as the ‘one to watch’ in the coming year.

RakeTheRake would like to congratulate Stefan on his fantastic WPT result.
