Phil Laak Wins First WSOP Bracelet

The summer was pretty rough for world-renowned casino poker player Phil Laak since he got into an ATV accident and spent days in the hospital. However, it appears that things are looking up for Laak after winning 2 major poker tournaments in a row.

Laak recently finished in the money at the English Poker Open, coming in 18th place with a prize of £6,800.

His success continued as Laak won his first WSOP* bracelet after taking down the £2,500 Six-Handed Hold’em event in the World Series of Poker Europe.  He had to battle through a 244-player field before landing on a final poker table of Willie Tan, Chris Bjorin, David Peters, Ilan Rouah, and Andrew Pantling.

As the final table poker hands progressed, Phil and Chris Pantling were the last ones on the table with poker chips.  Pantling held the lead, but Laak quickly made up the deficit and took a commanding lead.  In the end, Pantling went all-in with A-6 while Laak held K-5; Phil’s hand connected thus ending the tournament.

With the win, Phil Laak earned £170,802 while Pantling made £105,506 for 2nd place.  Laak was extremely excited about his holdem poker win as he said, “It’s super sweet….it’s Jennifer’s birthday today, so jubilation levels are at an all-time high, and there’s nothing like putting a little tilt on Antonio (Esfandiari).  This should tilt him a little because we are very competitive.”

The prize money was also a very welcome sight to Laak since he said, “The glory is not all that important to me, although I love glory, don’t get me wrong.  I’m hungry for that, but I want the money more.  I converted it on X-E and it’s like 267,000 American Dollars.  Minus tip, minus entry fee, it’s still north of 260….it’s huge.”

Laak could also be making huge money in online poker if he continues to take advantage of rakeback deals.  In many cases, players can earn as much as 40% in rakeback cash just by playing at certain poker sites.
