Net has closed around Spider-Man Star Tobey Maguire

In a follow up to our previous news post regarding Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire being caught in a poker web, it has emerged that he has offered a repayment sum…

Tobey Maguire, the Spider-Man star, centre of a lawsuit seeking repayment of hundreds of thousands of dollars allegedly won in high-stakes poker games, has agreed to pay $80,000 to the estate of Bradley Ruderman.

The lawsuit against Maguire, detailed alleged winnings of $311,000 that the actor took from Ruderman back in 2007 – 2008.

The problem here is that Ruderman’s poker funds had been ‘hard earned’ by embezzling them from his hedge fund clients, instead of investing them.

So there are a variety of alleged misdemeanours here – firstly the poker tournaments were unlicensed and illegal, secondly the players who won against Ruderman, including Maguire, were paid from funds from his Ponzi scheme and therefore the money needs to be returned, and finally that Ruderman’s clients have all been screwed over and lost substantial amounts of money.

For Maguire, it seems like 21 December will be his judgement day, determining whether his settlement sum is acceptable. Let’s hope if he’s ever played online poker, he’s been getting rakeback to soften the blow!

Meanwhile, Ruderman is serving a 10 year prison sentence for a variety of fraud crimes that include tax, wire and investor advice.

Sounds like he’s a real life Spider-Man baddie to us!
