Carlos Mortensen wins WPT Hollywood, earns #1 Spot on Money List

While most players today are making their money by playing online poker and taking advantage of rakeback deals, Carlos Mortensen is sticking to the old-fashioned way by earning his cash through live tournaments.  And Mortensen recently earned a lot of cash when he took the $393,820 top prize at the WPT Hollywood Poker Open.

This was the third World Poker Tour win for Carlos Mortensen and this ties Gus Hansen for the most all-time wins in the WPT.  Perhaps even more important than this is that Mortensen was able to move past Daniel Negreanu on the all-time WPT money list.  He’s earned over $5.6 million in the 56 poker tournaments he has played thus far in the WPT.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy for Mortensen since he had to compete with many of the world’s best live and online poker pros at the Hollywood Casino in Indiana.  But Mortensen was able to wade through the field of 144 players and onto the final table.  Eventually, he worked his way to a slight chip lead going into heads-up play with Mike Mustafa.  Mortensen quickly lost the chip lead though and struggled for a while before regaining his edge en route to victory.

With his third WPT win, Mortensen has only added to an impressive poker resume that includes a WPT Championship title (Season 5), a WSOP Main Event title in 2001, and numerous other impressive wins.  In all, Mortensen has managed to earn well over $9 million in live winnings through his career and has probably added to that number by playing in Internet poker rooms

The Hollywood Poker Open was a very nice win for “El Matador” heading into the World Series of Poker, which begins on April 27th.  He will be looking to add to his total of 2 WSOP bracelets this year.
