RakeTheRake’s friend Liv Boeree wins Record EPT Event

The European Poker Tour rebounded quite well after robbers broke into the Berlin poker tournament and stole well over $300,000.  1,239 people made their way to the EPT San Remo event via direct buy-ins and online poker room satellites.  The 1,239 players broke a record for an EPT event held on European soil, and created a €6 million-plus prize pool.

Of the 1,239 holdem poker players in attendance, RakeTheRake’s friend Liv Boeree ended up being the biggest winner of them all by taking first place and the €1.25 million prize pool.  The interesting thing about Boeree is that she had never won a major tournament in either live or Internet poker up until now.  Even more impressive is the fact that she has only been in poker for 5 years.

Boeree was invited to play in a televised poker tournament where Phil Hellmuth was her coach; after this, she made the decision to undergo extensive poker training to improve her play.  However, it took a while before Boeree made any significant cashes while playing poker games.  In fact, she gained a lot of her poker fame through covering WSOP events as a journalist, and posing in Maxim Magazine.  Her best finish before the San Remo win was a 9th place finish at the European Ladies Championship.

But 5 years of poker experience definitely proved to be enough when Boeree was matched up against Europe’s top players.  What’s more is that her win is the third major poker event that’s been won by a female poker pro this year.  UltimateBet pro Annie Duke proved she still has skills after winning the NBC Heads-up Championship.  The other huge win came when Vanessa Selbst played her poker hands better than everyone else at the NAPT Mohegan Sun tournament; her prize for winning was $750,000.
