WSOP Location to move again?

With the World Series of Poker* just one month away, the world’s biggest poker tournament event may be forced to find a new home.  That’s because Harrah’s Entertainment is thinking of selling the Rio to whatever company is interested in acquiring the massive hotel and casino.

This story was first broke by Business Week as they reported that Harrah’s is offering the Rio and all its property including machines and poker tables for around $500 million.  And while no specific details of the deal have been released yet, there are already several unidentified sources who are interested in purchasing the Rio according to various poker news outlets.

The reason why Harrah’s Entertainment wants to sell the Rio so badly is because they recently purchased the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino.  Planet Hollywood is not only comparable to the Rio both in terms of size and elegance, but this casino is also located on the Las Vegas Strip.  And having a casino that is on the Strip will enable Harrah’s to attract more people who like to play poker

With Planet Hollywood, the Rio no longer sees the need to own yet another large hotel and casino – even if it is a center for texas poker players everywhere.  If Harrah’s can sell the Rio, many expect the WSOP to move into Planet Hollywood because, along with Caesar’s Palace, it is the only casino large enough to house the gigantic holdem poker event.

The move isn’t expected to take place until at least 2011, but it’s strange that this prestigious poker extravaganza has to move locations once again after doing so in 2005 when it was moved from Binion’s to the Rio.  At least with huge online poker events like PokerStars’ Spring Championship of Online Poker, people don’t need to worry about it changing venues.
