Dan “jungleman12” Cates is 2010’s Biggest Poker Winner

From Rocky to Winston Churchill, everybody loves a comeback story. And the comeback story of Dan “jungleman12” Cates is not only one of the best in online poker history….it’s one of the greatest comeback tales ever!

Cates, who can currently be found at Full Tilt Poker along with their 27% rakeback deals, didn’t really start playing poker until 2007. At the time, he was an unassuming grinder at the $0.50/$1 ring game poker tables. After experiencing little success in cash games, Cates decided to start playing sit and go’s. Eventually, he went back to ring games and lost his entire bankroll, which prompted Cates to get a job at McDonald’s.

As a failed poker player who was stuck at a low-paying job, the prospects of Cates ever playing with the likes of Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey seemed pretty grim. However, Cates managed to build his internet poker bankroll bigger than ever before, and was eventually playing at poker’s highest Pot-Limit Omaha stakes. By the end of 2009 Cates was regularly competing with Dwan, Ivey, Patrik Antonius and llari Sahamies for poker hands worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

All of this set Cates up for huge success in 2010 as he earned $5.5 million and became the biggest winner of 2010. Cates rise to poker fame was highlighted by becoming the second person to accept Dwan’s Million Dollar Challenge; Cates put up $500k to Dwan’s $1.5 million to play. And with over 18,000 hands having been played in this 50,000-hand challenge, Cates is already up $819k.

With the massive $5.5 million profit in 2010, Cates joins Antonius (2009, $8.9 million) and Ivey (2008, $7.3 million) as recent overall winners. If you’d like to see Cates in action, visit Full Tilt and download their poker software. Assuming you plan on playing, make sure to take advantage of the aforementioned rakeback offer too.
